Global Operations Overview
Across our global operations, BioLite engages two distinct customer segments: off-grid households in emerging markets and outdoor recreation users seeking fuel-independent cooking and charging.
Using a unique business model called Parallel Innovation, our team develops core energy technologies that are applicable to both markets and then turns them into products unique to our outdoor and emerging markets customers.
Since our inception, BioLite has developed and launched over 20 innovative products, manufactured and shipped hundreds of thousands of units to over 100 countries, and established permanent in-country operations in East Africa with over 35 full-time staff. BioLite believes this model offers the opportunity to build a self-sustaining market-based approach to serving energy needs in emerging markets.

The Problem
Open fire cooking
causes over 4 million deaths per year, more than HIV, malaria and tuberculosis combined. Conditions like heart disease and COPD are directly linked to the toxic smoke inhaled by the billions of people still cooking over biomass fires.
These open fires also release significant amounts of CO2 and produce a staggering 25% of global black carbon emissions. This is more than all the world’s cars and trucks combined.
Access to electricity
is limited or non-existent for more than 1.2 billion people. Families are forced to pay large amounts of their income to purchase dirty, expensive kerosene lamps for lighting.
Mobile phone usage by off-grid consumers is growing rapidly. While the mobile phone is a strong economic development tool, locating reliable electricity for recharging remains elusive and expensive.
